MEALS

We will begin each day with breakfast in our hotel.  Most days, the classic “Full Scotish Breakfast” will be served, or you can select from a buffet.  The two nights we are staying near the Isle of Skye, we will be in apartments with kitchens, so breakfast will be toast, yogurt, granola, fruits and cheese.

Lunch will be on your own, but most days a light snack will suffice, since

our big meal each day will be afternoon tea, usually at 3:00.  The tea rooms we visit will vary greatly in style and ambience. Comparing and contrasting the very different styles and experiences is one of the delights of the trip!

Dinners, other than the welcome tea dinner on the first night, will be on your own.  You might wish to relax in your room with a snack or try a quaint spot you discovered that day.  Each hotel has either a restaurant on site or there are other dining  options near by.  At the apartments, you are welcome to utilize the kitchen to prepare a light meal as well.

TRANSPORTATION

We will have a small private bus once we leave Edinburgh, with a driver who is also our guide.   Hop-on-hop-off narrated bus tours will be utilized in Edinburgh.  We will walk on ferries and take a bus tour of the Isle of Mull which also will escort us to the Isles of Staffa and Iona for the day.  We will also take the Jacobite train from Fort William to Mallaig over the Glenfinnian Viaduct which was made famous in a Harry Potter movie scene.  A boat cruise and a tram and funicular round out our different methods of transportation on this tour.

The Highlands are often portrayed as a romantic part of Scotland, with towering mountains, deep blue lochs and empty glens where majestic deer run free and eagles soar. The fast changing weather of the Highlands create a mystical feeling;  one moment you see the hills and then they are gone.  Tales of fairies are commonplace.

The history of the area is complex, with the clans and their battles set in the rugged beauty of this area, and castles and castle ruins are plentiful.   We’ll gain an understanding of the people and their connection to the land as we explore this beautiful area.

ROOMS

The fine hotels we have selected are usually centrally located to make it easy for you to enjoy all the action without having to take a taxi.  We always choose charm over chain hotels, so expect some great ambience too.

All prices are based on double occupancy.  If you do not have a roommate accompanying you on the trip, you will be matched with another un-paired traveler of the same sex.

Some inns provide two twin beds in a room, while others have only a double

bed.  There are a limited number of single rooms available (on a first request basis) for an additional fee.
